Dental Billing Course FAQs — College of Dental Billing

What does a dental biller do?

A dental biller is responsible for creating, submitting, and tracking insurance claims to ensure the dental office receives payment for services rendered. Billers review treatment plans, verify patient coverage, and work directly with insurance companies to resolve delays or denials. They are the bridge between the clinical and financial sides of dentistry.

What does a dental coder do?

A dental coder translates treatment notes and clinical documentation into standardized CDT® codes so that insurance companies understand what procedures were performed. Accurate coding ensures compliance, proper reimbursement, and prevents costly claim rejections.

Do I need previous dental experience to take this course?

No prior dental background is required. The course starts with dental terminology and basic office workflow before introducing coding and insurance processes. It’s ideal for beginners, front office staff, dental assistants, or anyone looking to build a new career in dental billing.

Which books are required for this course?

Two books are required:

  1. ADA CDT® Current Dental Terminology

  2. ADA Code Companion
Both are essential references that teach you how to read, understand, and apply CDT® codes correctly. You’ll use them throughout the course and in real-world billing scenarios.

What will I learn in this course?

You’ll learn how to:

  • Read and interpret treatment notes and dental terminology

  • Assign correct CDT® procedure codes

  • Prepare and submit accurate insurance claims

  • Understand common claim rejections and how to correct them

  • Communicate confidently with insurance companies and patients about coverage and payments

  • Maintain compliance and accuracy in documentation

Can I work remotely after completing this course?

Yes. Many dental billers work from home or manage multiple offices remotely. After completing this course, you’ll have the skills to work in-office or remotely for dental practices, billing companies, or as an independent contractor.

Is this the same as medical billing?

No. Dental billing is its own specialty. This course focuses exclusively on dental insurance processes, CDT® codes, and dental claim submission — not medical codes like CPT or ICD. You’ll learn what’s relevant to dentistry without the confusion of medical billing systems.

Why should dentists understand billing and coding?

Dentists are ultimately responsible for all claims submitted under their license. Understanding billing, coding, and documentation requirements helps prevent errors, ensures legal compliance, and protects the practice’s revenue. Dentists with billing knowledge can identify issues early and keep their business financially healthy.

How long does it take to complete the course?

The course is designed to be self-paced. Most students complete it in two to four weeks, depending on their schedule. You can move faster or slower as needed — you’ll have full access to all materials from day one.

Will I receive a certificate after completion?

Yes. Upon successfully finishing the course, you’ll receive a Certificate of Completion from the College of Dental Billing, confirming your training and readiness to work as a dental biller or billing coordinator.
